Some Tips for Choosing an Air Compressor or Generator

By janet ashby

If you are shopping for a new compressor there are a few things that you would be wise to consider. Before you can choose how large a compressor you need, you should consider what it will be used for. Let’’s suppose you have a workshop and need an air compressor to drive your pneumatic tools. Consult the manual for your tools and locate the amount of air required for each tool. The manual for a nailer for example may note “air consumption - 3.0 10 nails/min at 90 pounds per square inch gauge” This will mean that the nailer requires 3.0 cu. ft. of compressed air to hammer ten nails/minute at 90 pounds /square inch. So you need to buy an air compressor with at least this capacity. If you could be using two or more tools at the same time (for a larger workshop for instance) you will need to add together the individual compressed air requirements.

Type of Compressors

Portability and Power Sources

If you intend to use your air compressor outside where there is no electricity source you will, of course, need a gasoline powered compressor. For using in a workshop, a compressor that runs on electricity is clearly more appropriate. A stationary type will be better for a permanent installation.

Compressor Features

Nowadays compressors driven by pistons require little maintenance and are oil free. Make sure there is a a pressure gauge, a pressure release valve and both automatic and manual switches. Make sure that portable compressors are easy to move around and have convenient carrying handles. Stationary models require have secure mounting brackets.
Generators

Generators are calibrated in watts and when you are deciding which one to buy you must be sure that it will give you enough power for your needs. For sporadic use if the power is cut for a short time and you only need to power lights and small appliances, a 2000-3000 watt side valve generator will usually be powerful enough. For longer outages select an overhead valve with 4000 or higher wattage.

Generator Features

* Low oil auto shutdown will protect the engine from damage
* Spark arrester for if you will be using your generator close to flammable material
* Compression release with a pull start is easier.

Generator Size

To come to a decision on the wattage necessary you should decide what appliances and lights you will be running from your generator in a power outage. This may include lighting, refrigerators, boiler/furnace, water pumps etc. Additionally many electric motors, for example sump and water pumps, despite the fact that they use a particular wattage when running, will also require perhaps three times this wattage to start.

Generator Types

There are two types of generator, portable or standby. As its name suggests the portable generator is able to be transported around as required, for use when camping or for using tools etc for use at a distance from an electricity outlet. A portable generator is also useful to power household appliances in a power cut by being temporarily connected to your home’’s power supply then switched on manually. The standby generator is permanently fixed in place, frequently on a concrete base, and permanently wired into the the electricity circuit of your house. Switches are used to automatically turn on the generator when a power outage occurs.
