Mens Fashion Tips: How to Wear Pocket Squares
By Hendrik Pohl
Some men would love to try something stylish, but many avoid it because they do not have any idea how to do it right and for fear of doing it badly. During the 19th century, wearing a simple angle-breasted suit creates a nice and complete look for a mans appearance. But this later died down and came back with more demand for sophistication in mens fashion with the advent of more metrosexual men.
Amazingly, there are many styling benefits of a pocket square which many men do not pay attention to as they find them overly conspicuous to their liking. Any worn out and low quality jacket can be easily changed with an inexpensive casually folded pocket handkerchief and proffer an exceptional outcome. I did not realize this amazing capability until is saw my brother wore one on his leather sports jacket.
Any jackets will naturally be transformed into an expensive looking one and spice up the coordination with just a simple puff-folded white handkerchief in the breast pocket. Having this handkerchief give an unequalled refined effect to suits and sports jacket where it is placed. And especially when the sports jacket or suit is bare and simple. This simple accessory should not be treated as old-fashion or out-dated. It can play unimaginable roles on a less formal occasion and still be a fashion statement.
Pocket squares and pocket handkerchief are terms used interchangeably, but how do they differ?
A pocket handkerchief is made from linen woven cloth or white cotton cloth. These are very popular during the 19th century for its clean and fine finishing effect when placed in a breast pocket. These pocket handkerchiefs usually are stiffer and crisp in texture because of the linen fabric. It also has sharper corners which may be folded to accentuate the four points or even create a TV-fold where it is neatly folded parallel to the breast pocket.
Pocket squares on the other hand are those made from a wider range of fabrics like silk or cotton. Silk fabrics, silk blends, cashmere or wool are most commonly used for squares as they are softer. The most appealing method for squares for breast pocket is by making it into a puff.
However, these two are not differentiated by their size. The ideal size for a traditional pocket square is from 16 to 18 inch square.
Neckties or Bow Ties With Pocket Square
A pocket square should be matched with either necktie or bow tie. Although some men think that the pattern and color on the pocket square should match the neckwear, this is not necessarily true. What is more important that the colors and patterns harmonize with one another.
