Having A Playhouse Can Be A Lot Of Fun!
By Shawn Wilson
When I was a child, I always dreamed of having my own playhouse - a real one with doors windows and more. I would always make forts out of anything, and have adventures! I would turn the couches upside down, take my mattress on its side, and cover it with a blanked. I would even add the latest amenities to rival a five star hotel like lights, a radio, and even some snacks!
Some of my favorite adventures were building massive, multi room, multi level forts in the undeveloped basement. We would arrange the basement to have dozens of hiding spots - the perfect place for a battle to take place. Equipped with laser guns, we would play laser tag for hours, until one of us finally conquered the others fort! I would have stayed down for days if not for my parents wanting me to eat and shower.
When I was 10, my step father and I built a tree house in the backyard. Now, my step father was anything but a handy man, and this thing looked like it was built by drunken preschoolers, but that didn”t stop us from playing pirates in it and having a blast. Ahoy matey! Yarrr!
What you often forget to realize is how much fun kids can have with the simplest of toys, big or small, homemade or bought. An adventure can be found using a spatula and some oven mitts. Now that adventure will be that much better if the children have a castle to retreat to and defend, or a countryside home to have tea parties in.
For those of you who are less handy, and still wish to give your child a playhouse, there are many options to purchase one. Make sure too look for one that is durable and stable. Your kids will be climbing all over this thing and it needs to hold their weight and not fall down on them. I also recommend purchasing one that is very easy to clean. You can only imagine how many spills, muddy and sticky hands and drinks that will end up all over their playhouse. A good wipe down with a non toxic cleaner, or some warm water and vinegar will do the job!
I was fortunate enough to finally have my parents buy one for me, after years of begging. Many memories were made with my friends and family because of my childhood playhouse… or should I say castle.
