Eating Out For Ladies Wearing Pregnancy Clothes

By Helen Worsley

It is a well-known fact that pregnancy requires a special diet. Various bacteria found in a number of foods may be dangerous for both the mother-to-be and her child. Moreover, ladies also need to avoid alcohol as it may be potentially harmful for the baby. And as those wearing pregnancy clothes may control what they eat at home with ease, eating out in restaurants may be tricky. That’’s why expecting ladies need to know exactly what food they can and cannot eat.

A woman wearing pregnancy clothes should provide good nutrition for two people. A great diet should contain something from all food products such as dairy, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and eggs. Most calories need to come from carbohydrates, which are usually found in bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and corn. Other calories should come from protein and fat, which are contained in products such as butter, oils, margarine, meat and dairy. So ordering these products in restaurants may be a good idea.

There are some additional minerals that should be present in the diet of any woman wearing pregnancy clothes. The first one is folic acid, which is especially important during the first three months of pregnancy. Folic acid is also known as vitamin B9 and is crucial for the creation of the baby’’s nervous system. Good sources of folic acid are barley beans, fruit, green vegetables, lentils and orange juice. A trip to a restaurant for vegetarians once in a while may be a good idea.

Another important mineral for women wearing pregnancy clothes is iron. During the whole period of pregnancy a woman’’s body needs more iron to produce all the blood needed to supply nutrition to placenta. Great sources of iron are green vegetables, strawberries, muesli and wholemeal bread. Iron works better in combination with vitamin C. It is worth noting that tea or coffee may interfere with the absorption of iron. Zinc and calcium may be also crucial, but they are normally obtained by a regular balanced diet.

Ok, it’’s good to know what food those wearing pregnancy clothes may eat. But what should be avoided? It may be a surprise to some, but one of the vitamins is potentially harmful for babies yet to be born. This is vitamin A, which is contained in liver. It is better to postpone eating liver products until after pregnancy. Also it is a must to avoid eating unpasteurised cheeses, blue-veinted cheeses, pate, prosciutto, raw shellfish and sashimi since these products may carry potentially harmful bacteria such as Listeria.

There are some restaurants that provide exclusive menus for expecting women. Unfortunately, there are not many in the UK, so chances are high that a mother-to-be is going to lunch at a regular restaurant most of the time. Keeping in mind these few tips about what’’s good for a body of a pregnant woman is likely to help. However, advice from a doctor should not be underestimated in any case. It is also worth noting that some experienced chefs may know which dishes are good for those wearing pregnancy clothes and recommend some safe yet tasty dishes.
