Baby Bedding, Comforter is more than a Covering
By Donna Randol
One of the most exciting events for a new mom is picking out nursery colors, and matching bedroom decor! Its fun shopping for all the baby furniture and dreaming about what you want and need. So why are so many stores selling beautiful baby comforters when according to all well known authorities a bare crib is best?
Because of the suffocation hazard of having a blanket, or anything cushy, including stuffed animals, crib bumpers or pillows in a baby’’s crib I have seen a decline of those requests on Baby Shower Gift Registries. I have heard moms-to-be say they would really like to have coordinating sheets and comforter but there isn”t any reason to buy the comforter since it can”t be used in the crib. There is no reason not to buy a comforter or place it on your Baby Gift Register as there are more uses for a baby comforter than just a covering.
A baby comforter makes a nice exercise pad for “tummy time” while under mom or dad’’s watchful eye. By lying baby on the comforter there is more padding that keeps them warm and the floor doesn”t seem as hard. By giving baby time on the floor they will start developing better head control which strengthens their neck and shoulders so they can move on to bigger and better things like rolling over and crawling. Many of baby’’s developmental milestones happen while lying on a comforter. And both parents and baby want that blanket to be a soft and safe place. The comforter also gives baby the feeling of protection and being loved.
Also as baby learns to sit, a comforter is nice for them to sit and play on. And nothing is better than cuddle time with a good baby book, or two before nap or bedtime.
You might also consider a matching comforter to use as a beautiful wall hanging. Since baby bedding is designed for babies it is usually light enough to hang on decorative hooks with ribbon pieces sewn into the top corners of the comforter. Or you can simply use a small quilter’’s rack to display the comforter. Once your baby reaches the appropriate age for a toddler bed you can take it down and use it as a beautiful bed covering.
As you dream about creating your nursery, there is no reason to overlook the beautiful uses of having a matching baby comforter.
